How to Memorize the Holy Quran?

Steps to consider in Qu’ran Memorization

 1.  Intention:

The first step every Muslim should consider in all his actions and deeds is making sure that his intention (Niyah) is always sincere to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala alone.
                                                                          Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala says:

“Say, “Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds.”6:162

 2. Seeking Refuge in Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala from Shaytaan:

It is advised to say: (‘A ‘oothu billaahi minash-Shaytaanir-rajeem) each time you are to start reciting Quran.
Allah Almighty says:

“So when you recite the Qur’an, [first] seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the expelled [from His mercy].”16:98

 3. Reciting it in a measured way. Tajweed:

The recitation of Quran must be in a measured and accurate way. Al-Imam Ibn Aljazari in his Mathn Al Ajroumiya (set of poems in Tajweed rules) says: “Whoever does not recite Quran with Tajweed is a sinner”
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala says:

“ Those to whom We have given the Book recite it with its true recital. They [are the ones who] believe in it. And whoever disbelieves in it – it is they who are the losers.” 2:121

“Or add to it, and recite the Qur’an with measured recitation.” 73:4

“And those who disbelieve say, “Why was the Qur’an not revealed to him all at once?” Thus [it is] that We may strengthen thereby your heart. And We have spaced it distinctly.” 25:32

The Prophet (peace and blessing of Allaah be upon him says):

“Verily the one who recites the Qur’an beautifully, smoothly, and precisely, he will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels. And as for the one who recites with difficulty, stammering or stumbling through its verses, then he will have TWICE that reward.”

 [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

4. Understanding Quran. Pondering deeply upon Quran:

The Muslim is asked to ponder, think deeply and reflect upon Ayaats of the Quran and not only reciting it in a beautiful way. Tajweed is not a reason itself, but it is a tool that appeals to understanding Quran.

Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala says:

“[This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded.” 38:29

“Then do they not reflect upon the Qur’an, or are there locks upon [their] hearts?”47:24

“Then have they not reflected over the Qur’an, or has there come to them that which had not come to their forefathers?”23:68

“Indeed, We have made it an Arabic Qur’an that you might understand.”43:3

5.  Implementing the Quran :

And this is the greatest challenge:
Once you memorize and understand a verse, two verses or even a one hundred verses of Quran, try to implement what these verses teach, because this helps a lot, settling the Quran in the heart.

 Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala says:

“Indeed, this Qur’an guides to that which is most suitable and gives good tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a great reward.”(17:9)

The prophet (peace and blessing of Allaah be upon him says):

“The example of a believer who recites the Qur’an and acts on it, like a citron which tastes nice and smells nice. And the example of a believer who does not recite the Qur’an but acts on it, is like a date which tastes good but has no smell. And the example of a hypocrite who recites the Qur’an is like a Raihana (sweet basil) which smells good but tastes bitter and the example of a hypocrite who does not recite the Qur’an is like a colocynth which tastes bitter and has a bad smell.”

 Bukhari  Volume 6, Book 61, Number 579

  6. Revision:

The prophet (peace and blessing of Allaah be upon him says):

“The example of the person who knows the Qur’an by heart is like the owner of tied camels. If he keeps them tied, he will control them, but if he releases them, they will run away.”

Bukhari Volume 6

“It is a bad thing that some of you say, ‘I have forgotten such-and such verse of the Qur’an,’ for indeed, he has been caused (by ALLAH) to forget it.  So you must keep on reciting the Qur’an because it escapes from the hearts of men faster than camel do.”

 Bukhari Volume 6, Book 61, Number 550

 7. The best times of Quran memorization:

The time of Sahar is the best time to memorize Quran, the period between midnight and Fajr. It is advised to take advantage of this blessed time to start memorizing new ayats or surahs and use the other times for example the time between Al dhhr and Al Asr, to revise what you already memorize.

8. The right way of Quran memorization

  •      Before you start on memorizing any new Ayah or Surat, make sure you get to recite it correctly because there is a great probability that you may memorize it mistakenly and it will be hard to correct your mistakes then. Therefore, it is advised to perform your recitation in front of a Sheikh until you are sure you recited correctly, then you can begin on memorization. If you don’t find a Sheikh and you want to memorize Quran yourself, then be advised to listen to the portion you want to memorize from your preference of audio (cd, tape, ipod, etc.) of one of the famous Qurr’aa (reciters). For example, Sheikh Al hussari, Sheikh Al huthaifi or Sheikh Saad Al Ghamidi…Al Hamdulillah there are many of them.
  • Try to stick to a one Mushaf (Quran).
  • Read the verse you want to memorize again and again many times. When you feel you can recite by yourself without reading from Al-Mushaf (The Quran), then try to perform your recitation by heart. And this should be repeated many times.
  • Once you finish memorizing and you wish to memorize the following Ayaat, start reading from the last Ayah you’ve memorized so that you can join what you’ve already memorized with the next and so on.
  • Use the verses you memorize in your prayers. This helps a lot strengthening your Hifz (memorization).

9. Duaa:

Ask Allaah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala to make it easy for you to memorize His book.

How did Sahaba (May Allaah be pleased with them all) memorized Quran?

Not all of the companions (May Allaah be please with them) of the Prophet (Peace and blessing of Allaah be upon him) memorized the whole Quran; they were more concerned with applying it in their lives. Umar Ibn Abi Taleb (may Allaah be pleased with him) kept on learning Surat Al-baquara  12 years. Abdu Allaah Ibn Masood (may Allaah be pleased with him) mentioned that  it was more difficult for them (meaning himself and the other companions) (May Allaah be please with them) of the Prophet (Peace and blessing of Allaah be upon him) to memorize Quran, yet it was easier to implement in their lives, and that those who would come after them (meaning us), it would be easier to memorize, but more difficult to implement.
These are the companions (May Allaah be please with them) of the Prophet (Peace and blessing of Allaah be upon him). The students of the Prophet (Peace and blessing of Allaah be upon him) and the best generation ever. They knew the truth of The Quran, they knew that it was not only a book to recite beautifully with the tongue and memorize by the heart but they also knew the purpose behind the recitation and the memorization, which is of course, acting according to The Quran’s teachings and putting them into action. Thus, they (may Allaah be pleased with them all) were aware of the fact that the quality is in the extent of their obedience to the words of Allaah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala and not in the quantity of the Ayats and Surahs they memorized.
